Present the facts
Editor: Ron Portal’s recent letter spanned topics from the immediate opening of schools, to the futility of wearing masks and the absurdity of quarantine mandates. In closing, he took a parting swipe at Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, just to frost his badly mixed cake.
Mr. Portal accused Rep. Ocasio-Cortez of wanting “to keep the shutdowns going until November” and that the losses suffered are “worth getting rid of Trump.” He must have been referring to a tweet, which appeared to be from the New York representative, that said as much. Reuters and PolitiFact, among other media watchdogs determined the tweet to be fabricated and labeled the statement as false. The Facebook post of the misinformation was flagged as part of Facebook’s effort to combat false news.
The letter includes other dubious claims. Portal points to the research of Dr. Andrew Bostom who, while a medical doctor, has spent most of his academic life in critique of Islam. The doctor is quite certain masks are useless in fighting viral spread. Is someone, maybe, playing fast and loose with the growing body of evidence that masks do slow contagion? I think I’ll tuck in tonight with “Visualizing Speech-Generated Oral Fluid Droplets with Laser Light Scattering,” a scientific investigation of mask effectiveness from the Harvard Medical School. That should be a partial antidote to the untruths I read.
Statements like those in the Portal letter, mislead the public. If it’s not true, don’t print it.
